Job Description

For

This role is for the grown-up who still gets excited about story time.
The one who believes reading can change a life.
The adult who can be silly and structured, imaginative and intentional.

Position Overview

The Reading Specialist works directly with youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade , helping them grow into confident, capable readers. You’ll create engaging literacy experiences, support students who are reading below grade level, and build meaningful relationships with families—all within the community where the children live.

  • Design and lead daily, interactive literacy lessons that make reading fun, accessible, and meaningful
  • Use best practices and proven interventions to help students reach grade-level reading
  • Individualize instruction to meet each child where they are (and cheer them on as they grow)
  • Build trusting relationships with children, families, volunteers, and community partners
  • Support and collaborate with parents—sharing tools, strategies, and encouragement
  • Administer reading assessments and track student progress
  • Participate in team planning, program development, and shared decision-making
  • Collaborate with volunteers and community partners to strengthen outcomes
  • Represent the organization with warmth, professionalism, and pride
  • Jump in where needed—because youth work is a team sport

\ What You Bring

  • An Associate’s degree (required); Bachelor’s preferred in Education, Child Development, or a related field
  • Experience working with children in reading or literacy support
  • Strong communication skills—spoken, written, and relational
  • Organization, creativity, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Self-motivation and comfort working independently
  • A deep respect for and commitment to working with families from diverse backgrounds
  • A personality that balances structure with play, patience with enthusiasm

Schedule & Compensation

  • Typical hours: Monday–Thursday, 1:00–6:00 PM
  • Occasional evenings or events for family engagement
  • Pay: Starting at $20/hour, with growth potential based on experience and education
