Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Conservation Supervisor, the Conservationist I performs the following duties:

  • Supervise, Train and Evaluate Corpsmembers.  

  • Teach, Direct and Counsel Corpsmembers.

  • Care, Maintenance and Security of State Equipment and Property.

  • Recordkeeping and Personnel Administration.

Working Conditions

Duties will be performed at the Magalia Center located at 6640 Steiffer Rd., Magalia, CA 95954.

Physical requirements for this classification are arduous: Requires lifting objects weighing 50 lbs or more, often in combination with pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, grabbing, carrying, kneeling, twisting, reaching at or above shoulder level, and daily active outdoor work. Includes standing and walking for extended periods of time; irregular work surfaces, and ability to hike difficult terrain. May require working extended hours and in remote areas as a Crew Supervisor on a Type I Fire Crew .

In Office – This position is classified as “In Office” and is not eligible for telework.

Special Requirements

Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements prior to being appointed:

Class C Commercial License – Provide evidence that a Class C Commercial license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Pre-employment Drug Test – In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Background Investigation – Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Medical Exam - A medical clearance exam is required for this classification.

Grooming Standards- Must be in compliance with Butte Fire Center grooming standards. (A copy of the Butte Fire Center Grooming standards will be provided upon appointment).

Note- Candidates will be required to pass the following trainings upon appointment

CalFire Type I Fire Training Program- Position requires successful completion of the CalFire Type I 80-hour Fire training program. This includes a vigorous physical fitness portion of the training.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Must be able to complete CALFIRE basic fire training after hire. In partnership with a CALFIRE Captain B, this position must be able supervise a Type 1 fire crew on emergency response incidents throughout the state. Desire to make a significant, positive difference in the youth and environment of the state; a strong sense of the values of integrity, honor, loyalty and professionalism.  Exhibit strength in character; respect the chain of command; possess unquestionable ethics; perform physically demanding work while assigned to a Type I Fire Crew; demand excellence from others; and lead by example; ability to take immediate action in life-threatening situations.

  2. Transfer Eligibility – Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and
    associated links above).
  3. Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).
  4. Training and Development (T&D) Assignment - State employees in a permanent appointment; and no longer on probation, may be considered for a T&D assignment.
