Description

The forensic lab at the Kentucky State Police Electronic Crime Branch analyzes digital evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout the Commonwealth. This evidence can be stored on computers, cell phones, vehicle infotainment systems, video surveillance systems, flash drives, etc., and is seized in investigations ranging from drug cases to child exploitation to homicide. Kentucky State Police examiners receive top-notch forensic training and work with the most current hardware and software in the industry.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes digital media for content of evidence pursuant to consent or search warrant.
  • Duplicates digital media from evidence source to working image for analysis.
  • Attends job related courses and conferences to keep abreast of changing technology, computer forensic software, and criminal activity relating to digital evidence.
  • Documents the digital evidence analysis process and prepares a final forensic analysis report for the requesting agency and courtroom testimony.
  • Receives and documents evidence, as well as maintains chain of custody from law enforcement agencies requesting analysis of digital evidence.
  • Assists other forensic examiners with keeping forensic work stations, operating systems, software patches and security software up-to-date and operational.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in computer science, information services, data communications and networks, digital forensic studies or a related field.




EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of experience performing forensic examination of computers, networks or other digital devices.




Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education in the field of computer science, information services, data communications and networks, digital forensic studies or a related field will substitute for the required experience on a year- for-year basis.




Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience working with computers and/or digital networking devices will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within six months of employment into this job classification, an employee must obtain the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+ certification ( OR other equivalent industry certifications. Applicants for employment with the Office of the Attorney General must be 21 years of age and are subject to the provisions of KRS Chapter 15 and 503 KAR 1:140 relating to peace officer certification as administered by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council. For additional information, please refer to KRS 15.382, Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is usually performed in a secure office setting. Work is performed with computers and peripherals used for the forensic examination of digital evidence. May accompany investigators to crime scenes to perform digital forensic examinations on computers, networks, and media.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
